Bible Talks Print E-mail

We start each day with a Bible Talk for the team.  For this week Andrew Barry has prepared three talks on mission from Acts - each focusing on a different lead character.

I think mission is a great time to be communicating the values for how we as a ministry are going to be doing ministry over the next 12 months.  So I try to pick passages that support lots of application for how we as a group go about doing the business of mission.

Two of the three talks are up on line: Peter, Paul and Barnabas

Transformed by the Risen Christ
Three men worth marking from the book of Acts

Transformed by Risen Christ: Peter, a man of courage
(Acts 3:1-4:31)

1. Courage is a virtue
a.    among us

b.    in God’s view

2. Where are we in the book of Acts?

3. Remember the Peter that was

4.  Learn from Peter’s courage
a. in action

b. its source

5. Commit to praying for courage
a.    the God who gives boldness

b.    courage and the word of God

c.    the risen Christ and courage

‘When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.’ (Acts 4:13) [put this quote in very small text at the bottom / or top of the page]

Transformed by the Risen Christ: Saul, a man who repented
(Acts 26:1-23)

1. Know that we are calling on people to repent

2. Where are we in the book of Acts?

3. Remember who Paul was

4. Learn from Paul’s transformation
a)    his encounter with the risen Christ

b)    his salvation

c)    his radical life re-orientation

d)    the servant of the servant

e)    his repentance and the repentance he preached

I too was convinced that I ought to do all that was possible to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth.  (Acts 26:9)

Transformed by the Risen Christ: Barnabas , second fiddle for Christ
(Acts 4:32-37; 11:19-30)

1. Playing second fiddle

2. Barnabas in the book of Acts

3. Learn from Barnabas’ example

a)    his generosity

b)    his work

c)    his trust in other people

d)    his source of power

e)    following up new believers

f)    a nickname that is a badge of honour

News of this reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.  When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.  He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.  (Acts 11:22-24)
