“It was better than I had thought. I hadn’t expected it to be so thorough and practical.” says Jane Kabanoff who attended the course.
We find many people think that they already know how to welcome at their church. However many churches can initially welcome people well, but fail to follow through in the following months.
We all know how to welcome in some way. Yet Jane found the course helpful by seeing the best ideas and experiences of others. “The video showed us the negative things that can be a turn-off, and showed helpful things to make people feel welcome. Then we discussed and brainstormed ideas on how to best welcome at our church.”
Each session in the four-week course starts by looking at a passage from the Bible. “I thought it was great to start off with the word of God”, says Nicki. “To be challenged on how we ought to love, it helped put welcoming into perspective - in light of the fact that we love because God loved us first, that His love is made complete in us and that if we don't love our brother we cannot love God.”
Nicki also found the course practical. “We looked not only at what happens once someone comes inside the building but we also looked at the exterior of the building - is it welcoming - is it 'open', do people know you are there?”
Initially only six people attended the course with Jane. “But we all thought it would be important for everyone in the church to be on the same page.” All the Home Groups at Jane’s church are now running the four-week course.
