Introducing God in the City
The average city worker
either works during their lunch break, takes a jog through Hyde Park or
reenergizes with a 20 minute power nap, but something quite different
was happening at Governor Phillip Tower.
A group of
Christians from a prominent legal firm ran ‘Introducing God’ over ten
weekly lunchtime sessions with six to twelve people. They watched the
Bible talks by Dominic Steele on DVD and then followed it up with
discussion over tea and coffee.
“Breaking into small groups meant that people were more outspoken,”
says inner city worker Lily Hagberg. As the organiser, she says the
guests found it easy to relate to the Australian approach that Dominic
took in his presentations.
The flexibility of the
‘Introducing God’ material meant that the group were able to run the
course in the short space of an hour. Instead of going away for the
weekend to discuss the difference Jesus makes, they shared lunch at a
restaurant.
Lily says talking to commerce workers about Jesus
is tough because they have very little knowledge about God, are
cautious and place low priority on investigating the claims of the
Bible. Out of the seven guests that attended the course, two accepted
Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.
“God convicted people’s hearts regarding their rebellion against Him [sic] wanting to do things their own way,” says Lily.
One
of these guests needed several weeks of follow up and didn’t make a
decision until after the course finished. “You could say ‘Introducing
God’ opened up opportunities for us to minister to him,” says Lily.
