Effective use of iGod at a retirement village
Bev
Menzies has run Introducing God twice at a retirement village in
Northmead, and has found it very effective in reaching churched
retirees with the gospel of Jesus.
The group of 8-12
residents met weekly in the village’s cinema to watch the DVDs, then
afterwards moved into a nearby meeting room to discuss the topics
raised over afternoon tea.
According to local church
worker and course driver Bev Menzies, the guests related well to the
discussion time, the stories and the talks, and felt comfortable to
talk about the ideas presented by Dominic Steele.
“They could explore what their faith meant to them in a relaxed atmosphere and ask questions,” said Bev.
All the people that attended said they were Christian and were challenged by the course to consider if this was genuine.
“Introducing
God was good to do with people that have some God knowledge, it
challenged our guests to rethink their relationship with God,” said Bev.
“We
kept challenging the guests with the question ‘Do you know for sure
what is going to happen to you when you die?’…This kept eating away at
them so bit by bit through the course their confidence grew in God til
at the end we said would you like to do something about it.”
In
the most recent Introducing God course, two guests committed their
lives to Christ and others were confirmed in their beliefs.
“At the end of the course they said they were now much clearer in what they believed and this gave them confidence,” said Bev.
The Introducing God course was promoted through the village newsletter and by a church member who lived among the residents.
Introducing
God has become a key activity for spreading the gospel among retirees
in Northmead and will continue to be an important strategy in the
evangelistic efforts of Northmead Anglican Church.
